There are a lot of hearing aid choices out there. How do you pick the right one for you? By providing as much information about yourself and your lifestyle to me, your Doctor of Audiology, I am able to sort through all of the options and make appropriate recommendations for you.
These are the things I consider for your personalized recommendation.
1. Your degree and configuration of hearing loss. Not all hearing aids are for everyone, we need to make sure the hearing aids we choose will provide the maximum benefit YOU need. I also want to make sure that if your hearing loss changes we have room to adjust the aids. The diagnostic testing I perform will let me know how much hearing you have left (residual hearing), what volume levels are comfortable and uncomfortable, how well you understand speech, and how well do you perform in noisy environments.
2. Your lifestyle. We want a hearing aid that is suited to your lifestyle. Do you go to movies, restaurants, and casinos? Do you spend time outdoors? Are you mostly at home? Hearing aids have different features to address different listening needs.
3. Your budget. We must consider your budget for hearing aids. Our prices are quite competitive and we do accept most insurance plans. We also offer payment plans with approved credit. Do you have a hearing aid benefit or discount program through your insurance provider?
4. Your finger dexterity. If you can not pick up small objects, have numbness in your fingers, or you have a tremor, operating controls on a hearing aid, inserting the hearing aid, or changing the batteries may be difficult for you. We do have hearing aids without user controls or user controls that can be disabled. We also have hearing aids that use rechargeable batteries.
5. Your vision. You will need to be able to see your hearing aid to change batteries, to clean the aids, and to know which one goes in which ear. If you have vision impairment, modifications can be made to help.
6. Your personal preferences. Do you want a specific color (skin tone, hair color, fun colors)? Do you want Bluetooth Compatibility? Do you want compatibility to your iPod, MP3 player or other audio devices? Do you want a remote control? Do you want moisture resistance? The new technology makes these hearing aids so much more than just a "hearing aid"...they can be part of a communication system.
Choosing your new hearing aids is an important decision. I do not want you to "waste" your money on a device that doesn't work for you and I do not want your new hearing aids to stay in a drawer. If we really take a good look at who you are and what you do in your daily life we can make a decision that will bring great benefit to your entire life.
Sometimes hearing aids are not enough. We may also need to look at assistive listening devices. Amplified telephones, television headsets, FM systems, modified smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, etc.
I look forward to working with you!
